The Cup has kicked-off on Saturday 16 June and will run until 29 July. In 2018, it will be dedicated to the 12th player, the fans.
“Football is capable of overcoming different barriers. It is a universal language able to gather around a football field more than 30 different communities, different generations, who in these years lived and changed Turin.” read Balon Mundial’s press release.
Coinciding with the World Cup, the tournament will also be part of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) #withrefugees world tour, an initiative aimed at celebrating refugees.
Two addition’s to this year’s event are the Fair Play team – team of people who will deal with promoting fair-play and monitor the behaviour of players and fans – and the introduction of the Fan Mediator – which will be a designated member of each participating team.
To support the event, the Italian NGO launched a crowdfunding campaign where they call on like minded people to support the event. You can help here.
The tournament is backed by the Fare network, FIFA Football for Hope, Giorgio Chiellini for Common goals and Turin’s Egyptian Museum.
