Norway’s John Carew and Daniel Braathen faced a torrent of racist abuse during World cup qualifying matches recently. The pair were singled out for abuse by Slovenian fans during Norway’s 3-2 win at Slovenia on Saturday 3 September 2005.
Braathen told Norwegian TV2 that there is little the players themselves can do during the match. However he was confident that match officials noted the abusive behaviour of the fans.
Norwegian coach, Aage Hareide, told TV2 that such behaviour is unacceptable. He said that he found Slovenians to be wonderful people but unfortunately
“There are some idiots in all countries.”
It is unclear at this stage whether match officials have actually notified football authorities of the incidents. The Norwegian FA have formally reported the incidents.
