The FARE network is holding a one-day conference with Emine Bozkurt MEP in the European Parliament in Brussels later this month on two key issues facing sport – tackling discrimination and fighting match fixing.
A range of speakers from the world of sport, civil society and the European Parliament will join Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism, Sport, Media and Youth on Thursday 22nd September.
The event will present future issues in relation to the two areas, set out new agendas and showcase good practice.
Good practice in social inclusion and sport
In relation to the anti- discrimination and social inclusion issues within the remit of FARE the conference will hear about good practice and challenges in tackling institutional discrimination, and projects that are successfully using football to integrate minorities within the game.
Commissioner Vassiliou is the lead on some of the key areas of European social policy, she also has overall responsibility for implementing the European Commission’s competencies in the field of sport.
Emine Bozkurt MEP is a Social Democrat Member of the European Parliament who has long been a friend of the FARE network. She is rapporteur for the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs on the European Commission Communication on Sport, and led parliamentarians in passing a ground breaking written declaration on racism in football in 2006.
Joining the Commissioner, Ms. Bozkurt and other actors within the European state will be ex- players, sport administrators and NGO’s.
