FARE is adding its voice to the campaign to release fellow anti-racist activist Santos Mirasierra from a Madrid prison. The letter of support below can be used as a template by other groups or individuals wishing to protest against his wrongful imprisonment.
Letter of support for Mr. Santos Mirasierra Velardo:
With this letter we – representing the FARE (Football Against Racism in Europe) network – would like to draw attention to the case of Mr. Santos Mirasierra, detained in Madrid since 01/10/2008 after the football game between Atletico Madrid and Olympique Marseille.
The FARE network has been working together with the supporters of Olympique Marseille for many years now, and Mr. Santos Mirasierra has been one of the leading figures in the organisation of projects and initiatives against racism and discrimination both in Marseille and internationally.
Moreover, together with his group, Mr. Mirasierra has been promoting activities aimed at reducing and preventing the recurrence of violent incidents in and around football.
Mr. Mirasierra’s commitment on these social issues has always been outstanding , with him and his group taking part and providing vital support to the FARE Action Weeks and FARE’s international festival “Mondiali Antirazzisti”.
Furthemore, the FARE network would also like to draw attention to, and condemn, the episodes documented in the Vicente Calderon stadium before and during the game, with racism towards Olympique Marseille players and unnecessary violence towards the French fans, leading the football governing body UEFA to sanction Atletico Madrid.
On this basis, the FARE network respectfully encourages the authorities to reconsider Mr. Mirasierra’s position and release him from prison.
FARE invites supporters to give their support to Santos by writing to him in prison at the following address:
