Fight against homophobia in French Ligue 126 May 2009

For the first time in French football, a national operation dedicated to fight against homophobia was launched with the clubs of League 1 at the 36th match day of the French championship, to which the clubs AJ Auxerre, AS Monaco, OGC Nice, AS Saint-Etienne and Paris Saint-Germain contributed.

During the match PSG vs. Auxerre, Jean-Claude Hamel, president of the AJ Auxerre, signed the Charter Against Homophobia. This club is now the 2nd club of professional football, after PSG, to make this official commitment to Paris Foot Gay (PFG).

The players of Auxerre and the PSG posed with a banner “Red card against homophobia”, that was produced with funding from the FARE network. An opening match organised in the Parc des Princes opposed the first team of PFG to the “Varietes Club de France”.

Besides, the clubs of Nice, Saint-Etienne and Monaco took the commitment to join PSG, Auxerre and the LFP by signing the Charter Against Homophobia during the next season.

This 36th match day championship was also the opportunity to present a video clip co-financed by the LFP (Professional Football League) and PFG, very widely diffused in the media. This clip was diffused on the huge screens of the Parc des Princes (Paris Saint-Germain), of Geoffroy Guichard (Saint-Etienne) and Louis II (Monaco).

Un carton rouge contre l'homophobie

This ninth national day against homophobia thus marks a bend. Never the world of professional football had been mobilised in this way in the fight against homophobia. Paris Foot Gay hopes that even more professional clubs will join in this fight the next season.
