First report on discrimination on social media in Spanish football launched today 12 February 2018


The report, commissioned to Séntisis by Cadena SER, analyses discussions and comments made on social media during 20 matches of the 2016/17 football season, including 2017 Spanish Super Cup, and 2017/2018 season, until 30 January 2018.

As part of this research, earlier in January, the Spanish radio revealed that over 3000 comments containing sexist and homofobic slurs were shared on social media during the Copa del Rey match between Espanyol v Barcelona (17 January) targeting, mainly, Barcelona player Piqué and his wife Shakira.

The report will be presented during this evening’s El Larguero show of Cadena SER, aired at 23h30.

On 13 February, the shows Hoy por HoyLa Ventana, and Hora 25 will discuss the highlights of the report. The shows Ser Deportivos, Hora 25 Deportes y Carrusel Deportivo will address incidents of discrimination inside football stadiums and share fans’ experiences on witnessing or being the victims of discrimination and violence in football.

The report is being launched ahead of the World Radio Day, marked on 13 February, and which in 2018 focuses on the alliance of sport and radio as a force for civic participation and development as well as for celebrating humanity in its diversity.

It is also part of the campaign “Sin Respeto No hay Juego” presented in January 2017 to promote the values of respect, diversity and tolerance as steps to prevent discrimination and intolerance in football.
