A football tournament is to be held in memory of murdered black teenager Anthony Walker. Anthony, a keen football fan, was brutally murdered with an axe earlier in the year whilst strolling through a park in Mersyside, UK.
The tournament on October 23 is backed by FARE partner Kick It Out, as well as Merseyside police and Liverpool and Everton Football Clubs. The event, involving teams from throughout the North West of England will be at King George V playing fields in Huyton, and follows the success of a basketball tournament held in honour of the schoolboy.
Organiser Van Gaffney said,
“I think Anthony would be pleased because it is about people working together no matter what their race. It's a chance for different cultures in the city to go to Huyton and say this is our culture and this is who we are. It's also a chance for the community of Huyton to stand up and say we are willing to do something to tackle racism in our area.”
