French Parliament Proposes Tough Measures23 January 2003

On Thursday 23rd January, the French parliament unanimously backed new anti-hooligan measures proposed by Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy as part of a new security bill. The measures include a two-year jail sentence and 30,000 euro fine for hooligans who break their stadium ban; and allow police to give sporting authorities a list of people banned from stadia.

Sarkozy bemoaned the “often racist” nature of football hooliganism. “We will no longer accept this savagery, this barbarity and this racism in and around our sports stadia.”
