Lipa punished for racist remark14 January 2004

Austrian international Andreas Lipa has been fined by the English FA for making a racist remark to Plymouth Argyle FC's Jason Bent. The 32-year-old player was charged with 'using insulting words aggravated by a racist element' during Port Vale FC’s home match against Plymouth on 18 October 2003.

The fine was limited to just £500 and Lipa escaped a ban, due to Port Vale’s swift and decisive action after the incident. Lipa immediately apologised for the incident, which was accepted by both Bent and Plymouth Argyle FC. Just two days after the game, Lipa was docked a week’s wages, which was donated to anti-racism groups. Lipa has also issued a written statement outlining his future conduct.
