List of incidents reported to Fare during August 2019

The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during August 2019. This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eyewitness or media accounts.  A Fare observer scheme is also currently at place at UEFA club competitions to monitor discriminatory behaviour.

Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA, and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members.

01 August 2019 - UEFA Europa League: FC Dinamo Tbilisi v Gabala FK

Fare observed Dinamo Tbilisi supporters displaying a far-right banner within the stadium. A report was sent to UEFA.

01 August 2019 - UEFA Europa League Gżira United F.C. v FK Ventspils

The Ukrainian goalkeeper of FK Ventspils, Kostyantyn Makhnovskyi, racially abused Gzira player during the match.

01 August 2019 – UEFA Europa League: CS Universitatea Craiova v Budapest Honvéd FC

Fare observed CS Universitatea Craiova supporters chanting xenophobic anti-Hungarian chants. A report was sent to UEFA.

01 August 2019 – UEFA Europa League: CS Universitatea Craiova v Budapest Honvéd FC

Fare observed Honved supporters chanting anti-Roma chants during the match. A report was sent to UEFA.

01 August 2019 – FC Schalke 04: Clemens Tönnies

At a forum, the president of FC Schalke 04, Clemens Tönnies, made racist remarks targeting Africans.

01 August 2019 – UEFA Europa League: Maccabi Haifa F.C. v RC Strasbourg Alsace

Maccabi Haifa F.C. supporters directed racist chants at RC Strasbourg Alsace player, Youssouf Fofana, during the match. A report was sent to UEFA.

03 August 2019 – Russian Frist Division: FC Zenit Saint Petersburg v FC Krasnodar

A group of FC Zenit Saint Petersburg supporters protested the club’s signing of Malcom Oliveira by displaying a xenophobic banner.

03 August 2019 – English Second Division: Coventry City F.C. v Southend United F.C.

Southend United F.C. striker, Theo Robinson, was subject to racist abuse from Coventry City F.C. supporters.

04 August 2019 – Scottish Women’s First Division: Celtic F.C. Women v Rangers W.F.C.

Rangers Women were subject to sectarian and misogynistic abuse by the Celtic F.C. supporters.

06 August 2019 – UEFA Champions League: FK Crvena Zvevda v F.C. Copenhagen

As F.C. Copenhagen players celebrated the draw against FK Crvena Zvevda, they were racially abused by FK Crvena Zvevda supporters. A report was sent to UEFA.

08 August 2019 – UEFA Europa League: FK Partizan v Yeni Malatyaspor

Fare observed racial abuse towards Yeni Malatyaspor player Mitchell Donald by FK Partizan home supporters. A report was sent to UEFA.

08 August 2019 – UEFA Europa League: FK Partizan v BtcTurk Yeni Malatyaspor

Fare observed the display of a far-right symbol by FK Partizan home supporters in the stadium. A report was sent to UEFA.

08 August 2019 – UEFA Europa League: PFC Lokomotiv Plovdiv v RC Strasbourg Alsace

Fare observed PFC Lokomotiv Plovdiv supporters directing racial chanting at RC Strasbourg Alsace players of colour during the match. A report was sent to UEFA.

08 August 2019 – UEFA Europa League: HNK Rijeka v Aberdeen FC

Several Rijeka fans were seen performing Nazi salutes.

08 August 2019 – Pre-season Friendly: Queens Parks Rangers U18 v AD Nervión

AD Nervión directed racist abuse to Queens Park Rangers players where after the team left the field. An investigation has been launched.

11 August 2019 – Slovakia First Division: FK Pohronie v FC Spartak Trnava

FK Pohronie fans directed racist chants at Rafael Tavares after he scored a goal for FC Spartak Trnava.

14 August 2019 - UEFA Super Cup: Liverpool F.C. v Chelsea F.C.

Fare observed Chelsea F.C supporters displaying a far-right banner and a few individuals wearing far-right T-shirts. A report was sent to UEFA.

16 August 2019 – French Second Division: AS Nancy v Le Mans FC

AS Nancy supporters chanted homophobic chants directed at La Ligue authorities, the match was interrupted by the referee due to the chanting.

22 August 2019 – UEFA Europa League: ŠK Slovan Bratislava v PAOK FC

Fare observed ŠK Slovan Bratislava supporters chanting discriminatory chants directed at Roma people and the display of far-right banners. A report was sent to UEFA.

22 August 2019 – UEFA Europa League: Legia Warsaw v Rangers F.C.

Fare observed sectarian chanting by Rangers F.C supporters during the match. A report was sent to UEFA.

24 August 2019 – French First Division: Brest v Reims

Brest supporters chanted homophobic chants directed at La Ligue, the match was interrupted by the referee due to the chanting.

25 August 2019 - Brazilian first division: CR Vasco da Gama v São Paulo FC

CR Vasco da Gama supporters chanted homophobic chants aimed at the players of São Paulo, whereby the referee halted the match.

25 August 2019 – Copa FGF: SC Internacional B v Esporto Clube Novo Hamburgo

Esporto Clube Novo Hamburgo supporters racially abused SC Internacional B goalkeeper Carlos Miguel the match was interrupted by the referee due to the chanting.

25 August 2019 – Costa Rican First Division: Limón F.C. v Deportivo Saprissa

Walter Centeno, Sarpissa coach, racially abused Limón FC player, Jossimar Pemberton. The Costa Rican Football Federation has launched an investigation.

25 August 2019 – French First Division: As Monaco FC v Nîmes Olympique

Nîmes Olympique supporters chanted homophobic chants directed at La Ligue, where after the match was halted.

28 August 2019 – French First Division: OGC Nice v Olympique de Marseille

Supporters displayed homophobic banners in the stadium and chanted homophobic chants aimed at the French league, the match was interrupted by the referee due to the chanting.

Social Media

Twitter: Duane Holmes

Derby County FC midfielder, Duane Holmes, received racist abuse on Twitter after Derby County FC’s win against Huddersfield on 5 August 2019.

Twitter: Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah was subject to racial and religious abuse on twitter. The man who sent the tweet has been arrested.

Facebook: Jefferson Farfán

Jorge Benavides, a Peruvian comedian, racially abused Jefferson Farfán on Facebook by imitating the football player and painting himself blackface.

Twitter: Tammy Abraham

Tammy Abraham was subject to racial abuse on twitter after he missed a penalty shot during the UEFA Super Cup Final between Liverpool FC and Chelsea FC on 14 August 2019.

Yakou Meite

Yakou Meite was subject to racial abuse on social media after Reading FC’s win over Cardiff City on 18 August 2019.

Paul Pogba

Paul Pogba was subject to racial abuse on social media after missing a penalty in the match Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. v Manchester United F.C. on 19 August 2019

Sanctions

The FA

Millwall F.C. have been fined with a £10,000 penalty and ordered to implement an action plan as a result to the racist chants from the fans during the 4th round of the FA Cup Millwall F.C. v Everton F.C. on 26 January 2019.

UEFA

The Ukrainian goalkeeper of FK Ventspils, Kostyantyn Makhnovskyi, has been banned for 10 matches due to incidents of racist abuse during the match Gżira United F.C. v FK Ventspils on 1 August 2019.

UEFA

FC Dinamo Tbilisi has been sanctioned with a €50,000 fine and a stadium closure due to the racist behaviour of the supporters during the match FC Dinamo Tbilisi v Gabala SC on 1 August 2019.
