List of incidents reported to Fare during December 2019

The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during December 2019. This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eyewitness or media accounts. A Fare observer scheme is also currently at place at UEFA club and national team competitions to monitor discriminatory behaviour.

Fare sends trained international observers to record discriminatory incidents at UEFA Champions League, Europa League, European Qualifiers and UEFA EURO 2020 as well as FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Preliminary Competition.

Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA, and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members.

01 December 2019 – German Kreisliga – Harburger TB v Vereinigung Tunesien

Vereinigung Tunesien supporters directed monkey chants at black Harburger TB players. The team walked off the pitch.

01 December 2019 – Bosnia and Herzegovina Premier League - NK Siroki Brijeg - FC Zvijezda 09

Siroki Brijeg fans displayed a portrait of a far-right war criminal Slobodan Praljak.

6 December 2019 – German Regionalliga – Hertha U23 v Lokomotive Leipzig

Hertha player Jessic Ngankam was racially abused by both fans and a player of fourth-division side Lokomotive Leipzig.

07 December 2019 – German amateur Fußball-Liga Mecklenburg-Vorpommern – Dynamo Schwerin v Anker Wismar

Home fans of Dynamo Schwerin directed monkey chants at Anker’s player Kamara Abu Bakarr. The team walked off the pitch in protest.

07 December 2019 – English League Two – Forest Green Rovers v Scunthorpe United

An individual Forest Green Rovers fan racially abused Scunthorpe player Jordan Clarke. A stadium announcement was broadcasted warning that “racist language used in the East Stand” of the New Lawn stadium during the match.

07 December 2019 – English Premier League – Everton v Chelsea

Everton fans directed homophobic chants at Chelsea supporters.

07 December 2019 – English Premier League – Man City v Man United

An individual Man City supporter directed monkey noises and gesture at United players Fred and Jesse Lingard.

07 December 2019 – English Premier League – Tottenham v Burnley

A teenage Burnley supporter was ejected from the stadium for making a racist gesture towards Tottenham’s striker Son Heung-min.

08 December 2019 – English Premier League – Brighton & Hove Albion v Wolverhampton

Two Wolves fans have been ejected for homophobic chanting directed at Brighton fans and players.

08 December 2019 – Austrian Bundesliga – Rapid v Austria

Both sets of fans directed homophobic chants at each other.

11 December 2019 – Brazilian U20 Championship - Vasco Da Gama U20 vs. Independiente U20

Vasco player Miranda was racially abused by Independiente U20 fans as he was taking a penalty kick.

14 December 2019 – German Regionalliga – Hertha Berlin U16 v VfB Auerbach

Hertha Berlin U16 team and coaching staff walked off the pitch after several of their players were racially abused by Auerbach fans.

15 December 2019 – Indian Super League - Mumbai City FC v Bengaluru FC

The match referee, Turki Mohammed Al Khudayr made racist comments about Mumbai City FC’s Gabonese forward Serge Kevyn.

18 December 2019 – Dutch KNVB Cup – Telstar v Ajax

Telstar fans racially abused Ajax goalkeeper André Onana.

22 December 2019 – English Premier League – Tottenham v Chelsea

Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger was subjected to racist abuse by an individual Tottenham fan. Several announcements were made over the tannoy system calling to cease racist behaviour. Tottenham later announced that their investigation has been inconclusive.

21 December 2019 – English Championship – Millwall v Barnsley

Millwall fans directed racist abuse at one of the Barnsley players.

22 December 2019 – English Premier League – Tottenham v Chelsea

A Chelsea supporter was arrested for racially abusing Tottenham striker Son Heung-Min.

26 December 2019 – Northern Ireland Premiership – Coleraine v Ballymena

Coleraine fans chanted homophobic chants targeting Ballymena players and chanted a far-right chant.

26 December 2019 – English League One, Peterborough United v Doncaster Rovers

Two Doncaster supporters have been arrested following racist abuse of Peterborough players.

26 December 2019 – Mexican Liga MX - Monterrey v Club America

Monterrey defender Jesus Gallardo was recorded to shout an anti-gay slur during the title celebrations.

27 December 2019 – Scottish Championship – Dundee United v Dundee FC

Dundee United fan was caught directing racist abuse at Dundee FC player Kane Hemmings

28 December 2019 – English Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division – Fisher FC v AFC Croydon Athletic

A Fisher FC player has made a racist remark towards AFC Croydon Athletic player. Croydon Athletic players and coaching staff decided to walk off the pitch, abandoning the game.

29 December 2019 – Scottish Premiership – Celtic v Rangers

A 12-year-old boy was charged over racist chants targeting Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos.

04 December 2019 - Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport

The paper illustrated Roma v Inter match with a front page featuring Romelu Lukaku and Chris Smalling titled ‘Black Friday.’

12 December 2019 – Crvena Zvezda player Jander

Crvena Zvezda Brazilian striker Jander was subjected to a torrent of racist abuse on social media after missing a penalty in the UEFA Europa League game against Olympiacos.

29 December 2019 – Brazil – Flamengo

Flamengo defender Matheus Thuler called striker Lincoln, his teammate at the Rio de Janeiro club, “monkey” on a video call on the Internet.

Sanctions

17 December 2019 – English Premier League – Stoke City

A Stoke City football fan has been fined £310 and received a football banning order for three years after he racially abused a footballer during a Stoke City versus Nottingham Forest game on 27 September 2019.

19 December 2019 – FIFA Preliminary Competition of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ – Sayed Baqer

FIFA opened proceedings against Sayed Baqer on 19 November 2019 and sanctioned the player with a 10-match ban and CHF 30 000 fine on 19 December 2019 for racist ‘slant-eyed’ gesture directed at Hong Kong fans during the Preliminary Competition of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ – Hong Kong v Bahrain played on 14 November 2019.

28 December 2019 – Bosnia and Herzegovina FA

BiH Football association have sanctioned NK Siroki Brijeg with a partial stadium closure and a 3,000 KM fine for their fans displaying a portrait of a far-right war criminal during BiH Premier League match against FC Zvijezda 09 on 01 December 2019.
