List of incidents reported to Fare during February 2019

The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during February 2019. This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eyewitness or media accounts. A Fare observer scheme is also currently at place at UEFA club competitions to monitor discriminatory behaviour. Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA, and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members. The general public can keep us informed of national and international level incidents through the reporting form here.

02 February 2019 – Dutch Third Division: VVSB v IJsselmeervogels

The referee abandoned the game between VVSB and IJsselmeervogels after racial chants by a group of supporters.

02 February 2019 – Israeli Premier League: Bnei Yehuda Tel Aviv v Beitar Jerusalem

Beitar Jerusalem’s players, Antoine Conte and Ange-Freddy Plumain, were racially abused by a group of Bnei Yehuda supporters making monkey noises.

03 February 2019 – Italian Serie A: AS Roma v AC Milan

A group of supporters directed monkey noises at AC Milan midfielder, Franck Kessié.

03 February 2019 – Italian Serie A: FC Internazionale v Bologna FC 1909

A group of Inter Milan fans directed racial abuse towards the Bologna central midfielder, Ibrahima Mbaye.

04 February 2019 – English Premier League: West Ham United FC v Liverpool FC

Video footage emerged on social media of a West Ham United supporter directing Islamophobic slurs at Liverpool player, Mohamed Salah, during the match. West Ham United launched an investigation.

06 February 2019 – English Premier League: West Bromwich Albion FC v Brighton & Hove Albion FC

Brighton’s left-back, Gaëtan Bong, was subjected to racial abuse by a group of West Bromwich Albion fans.

06 February 2019 – Scottish Premiership: Aberdeen FC v Rangers FC

Two Aberdeen fans made racial offensive remarks during the Scottish Premiership game. Police Scotland is carrying out an investigation.

07 February 2019 – Scotland National Women Team

Scotland's official football kit retailer JD Sports removed a suggestive, sexist photo advertising Scotland national women's football strips.

10 February 2019 – Serbian First Division: FC Napredak

FC Napredak players Ibrahim Ndiyayea and Samuel Bahu Regis were subject to verbal and physical racist attacks in a central park in Krusevac, Serbia.

10 February 2019 – Spanish Women First Division: Rayo Vallecano v FC Barcelona Femení

FC Barcelona Femení player, Andressa Alves da Silva, was subject to racist abuse by a Rayo Vallecano player.

14 February 2019 – UEFA Europa League: FC Shakhtar Donetsk v Eintracht Frankfurt 

Fare recorded discriminatory displays by Shakhtar fans during the match FC Shakhtar Donetsk v Eintracht Frankfurt.

A report was sent to UEFA for action.

16 February 2019 – Spanish La Liga: Rayo Vallecano v Atlético Madrid

A group of Atlético Madrid supporters made Nazi salutes and displayed several far-right banners in the stadium. The Spanish FA Disciplinary Committee has launched an investigation.

17 February 2019 – Scottish PremiershipKilmarnock v Celtic

Celtic fans directed sectarian chants at Kilmarnock player Kris Boyd.

17 February 2019 – German Oberliga: HSV Barmbek-Uhlenhorst v Meiendorfer SV

Meiendorfer SV refused to continue playing after one of their players was racially insulted by a Barmbek-Uhlenhorst supporter.

17 February 2019 – Polish First Division: Zaglebie Lubin v Miedz Legnica

Zaglebie Lubin fans displayed a large anti-Roma tifo.

17 February 2019 – German Bundesliga: Bibiana Steinhaus

Iranian television did not broadcast the Bundesliga match between Bayern Munich and Augsburg, as the female referee Bibiana Steinhaus was in charge.

17 February 2019 – Brazilian First Division: CR Vasco da Gama v Fluminense FC

Video footage emerged of Fellipe Bastos, a CR Vasco da Gama player, using homophobic language towards Fluminense FC immediately after the game.

20 February 2019 – UEFA Europa League: Sevilla FC v SS Lazio

Fare recorded discriminatory displays by Lazio fans during the match Sevilla FC v SS Lazio.

A report was sent to UEFA for action.

20 February 2019 – Scottish Premiership: Rangers FC v Kilmarnock FC

Kilmarnock manager, Steve Clarke, was subject to sectarian abuse by Rangers fans.

21 February 2019 – Fulvio Collovati

The former Italian international and World Champion, Fulvio Collovati, made a sexist comment during an Italian TV programme. Fulvio Collovati was heard saying, “When I hear a woman talk about tactics my stomach turns over”.

22 February 2019 – Dutch First Division: ADO Den Haag

A group of ADO Den Haag fans visited the city centre of Amsterdam and vandalised several Jewish buildings and a WW2 statue with anti-Semitic graffiti.

23 February 2019 – English League One: AFC Wimbledon v Charlton Athletic FC

Two racial incidents occurred during the match, both directed at Charlton Athletic players. AFC Wimbledon has launched an investigation.

23 February 2019 – Croatian First Division: Hajduk Split v HNK Gorica

A group of Hajduk supporters displayed a banner glorifying Croatian fascist Vjekoslav "Maks" Luburić.

24 February 2019 – Swedish Cup: Örgryte IS v Jönköpings Sodra IF

Jönköpings Sodra IF players, Amir Al-Ammari and Alexander Jallow, were subject to racial abuse by Örgryte fans. Örgryte IS launched an investigation.

24 February 2019 – Belgian First Division: RSC Anderlecht v Club Brugge

During a match dedicated against homophobia in football, RSC Anderlecht supporters directed homophobic slurs at Club Brugge player Ruud Vormer and Club Brugge fans.

24 February 2019 – Bulgarian First Division: Levski Sofia v CSKA Sofia

CSKA Sofia supporters displayed a homophobic banner during the match.

26 February 2019 – English Championship: Queens Park Rangers FC v Leeds United FC

Video footage emerged of a Leeds United fan shouting racial slurs at Queen Park Rangers supporters. Leeds United FC launched an investigation.

26 February 2019 – English Premier League: Leicester City FC v Brighton & Hove Albion FC

Three Leicester fans directed homophobic abuse towards Brighton. The Leicestershire Police arrested them during the game.

27 February 2019 – Dutch First Division: Feyenoord v AFC Ajax 

During the match several Feyenoord fans directed monkey noises at AFC Ajax goalkeeper, André Onana. Feyenoord fans also chanted anti-Semitic slogans and displayed anti-Semitic banners during the game.

27 February 2019 – Spanish Copa del Rey: Real Madrid CF v FC Barcelona

A group of Real Madrid fans directed homophobic chants towards Barcelona player, Gerard Piqué, during the match by calling him a ‘maricón’. More sexist and racist comments were made about Piqué’s family.

28 February 2019 – SS Lazio supporters

Anti-Semitic graffiti, including a Swastika and a reference to Anne Frank, appeared in the city of Rome targeting AS Roma fans.

German Oberliga: Barmbek-Uhlenhorst supporter

A Barmbek-Uhlenhorst supporter received a stadium ban from the club after racially abusing a player from visiting Meiendorfer SV.
