The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during July 2018. This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eyewitness or media accounts. A Fare observer scheme is also currently at place at UEFA club competitions to monitor discriminatory behaviour.

Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA, and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members.

01 July 2018 – Spain fan

A Spain fan referred to Telecinco Reporter María Gómez on air as “beautiful” instead of addressing María by her name in an attempt to belittle the journalist.

02 July 2018 – FIFA World Cup: Brazil v Mexico

A Mexico fan made monkey gestures towards Brazilian writer Raiam Santos during the Brazil v Mexico match.

02 July 2018 – Mexico Coach Juan Carlos Osorio

Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio made a sexist comment when he referred to football as being a “game of men”.

06 July 2018 – England fan

An England fan sexually harassed TV4’s Frida Nordstrand as she was live on air with fellow journalist Olof Lundh.

10 July 2018 – Oliver Pocher 

Mesut Ozil has been mocked by comedian Oliver Pocher and told he “does not belong to Germany” by journalist Claus Strunz in a racially motivated attack on the player after Germany were knocked out of the FIFA World Cup.

10 July 2018 – LBC Radio Caller

An LBC Radio listener called the talk show hosted by Ian Maguire to complain about the diversity within the England team in a racially motivated attack on the squad.

11 July 2018 – FIFA World Cup: Croatia v England

A group of approximately 10-15 England fans singing ‘No surrender to the IRA’. The chant has been commonly used by the far-right across the UK in the football context.

12 July 2018 – UEFA Europa League: Chikhura v Beitar Jerusalem

Before the match, a group of Beitar Jerusalem fans sang racist chants in celebration of the Beitar fans sharing racist views.

A report was sent to UEFA for action.

17 July 2018 – UEFA Champions League: FK Crvena Zvezda v FK Spartaks Jūrmala

During the match, several thousand FK Crvena Zvezda fans sang a neo-Nazi song glorifying World War II leaders of the Chetnik movement responsible for ethnic cleansing. A report was sent to UEFA for action.

17 July 2018 – UEFA Europa League: PFC Levski Sofia v FC Vaduz

A large group of PFC Levski Sofia fans directed monkey chants towards FC Vaduz player Mohamed Coulibaly. A report was sent to UEFA for action.

17 July 2018 – Torpedo Moscow Ultra Group West-5

Torpedo Moscow’s ultra fan group West-5 criticised the club for signing Russian player Erving Botak-Lobom because the player is black.

19 July 2018 – UEFA Europa League: Dinamo Tbilisi v Dunajska Streda

During the match, a group of Dinamo Tbilisi fans displayed neo-Nazi tattoos and one fan performed a Nazi salute. Dunajska Streda fans also displayed a neo-Nazi banner in the stadium. A report was sent to UEFA for action.

24 July 2018 – UEFA Champions League:FK Crvena Zvezda v FK Sūduva

Several thousand FK Crvena Zvezda fans sang songs glorifying the neo-Nazi Chetnik movement and Rakto Mladic during the match. A report was sent to UEFA for action.

24 July 2018 – Friendly Match: Mansfield Town v Sheffield Wednesday

Mansfield Captain Krystian Pearce reported that he was racially abused during the match.

26 July 2018 – UEFA Europa League: FK Partizan v FK Trakai

A group of FK Partizan fans displayed a Confederate flag during the match. A report was sent to UEFA for action.

26 July 2018 – UEFA Europa League: Spartak Subotica v Sparta Prague

A group of Sparta Prague fans directed monkey chants towards a player from their own club, Guélor Kanga.

27 July 2018 – Russian Super Cup: Lokomotiv Moscow v CSKA Moscow

A group of Lokomotiv Moscow fans racially abused CSKA player Vitinho during the second half of the match.

Brazilian international Fernandinho was racially abused online by Brazil fans after they were knocked out of the FIFA World Cup.

Twitter: #MeTooFoot

After France won the World Cup on the 15 July, dozens of women revealed on Twitter under #MeTooFootthat they were victims of sexual assaults during the celebrations across France by male fans.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee gave a warning to the England Football Association for political chants by fans during the match against Croatia.
