List of incidents reported to Fare during June 2018

The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during June 2018. This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eyewitness or media accounts. A Fare observer scheme is also currently at place at UEFA club competitions to monitor discriminatory behaviour.

Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA, and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members.

Incidents

02 June 2018 – Ukrainian Second Division: Nyva Vinnytsya v Ahrobiznes Volochysk

A group of Nyva Vinnytsya fans wore Swastika t-shirts to the match.

07 June 2018 – Dr. Oetker

Food brand Dr. Oetker released a sexist World Cup advertisement in Switzerland with a woman holding a cake with the slogan “make your man happy, even if he has a second love.

13 June 2018 – Russian MP Tamara Pletnyova

Russian MP Tamara Pletnyova made racist comments when telling Russians not to have sex with fans attending the World Cup; especially those from Africa, Latin America or Asia.

15 June 2018 – Globo Esporte Repoter Julia Guimarães

A Uruguay fan sexually harassed Globo Esporte’s Julia Guimarães outside the Ekaterinburg Arena before the Egypt v Uruguay match.

15 June 2018 – Deutsche Welle ReporterJulieth González Therán

A fan at the FIFA World Cup sexually assaulted Deutsche Welle reporter Julieth González Therán as she delivered a report live on air.

16 June 2018 – ESPN Reporter Agos Larocca

ESPN Reporter Agos Larocca was live on air when an Iceland fan attempted to grab her.

16 June 2018 – Diego Maradona

Diego Maradona made a racist gesture towards a group of South Korea fans during the match between Argentina and Iceland.

17 June 2018 – Südostschweiz Newspaper’s René Weber

Sports Reporter René Weber for Swiss newspaper Südostschweiz was criticised after he wrote a World Cup column with the sexist headline: “Where are the beautiful Olgas from the Volga?”

17 June 2018 – Brazil Fans

A group of Brazil fans made sexist comments towards a woman at the FIFA World Cup.

17 June 2018 – Patrice Evra

Patrice Evra patronisingly applauded Eniola Aluko, which has been heavily criticised for being sexist.

18 June 2018 – A Peru Fan

 A Peru fan coaxed a woman into saying sexually explicit phrases in Spanish.

18 June 2018 - England fans

A group of England fans sang anti-Semitic songs and performed Nazi salutes before England’s World Cup match against Tunisia in Volgograd.

18 June 2018 – FIFA World Cup: Tunisia v England

 An England fan was racially abused by a group of England fans during the match.

18 June 2018 – Aftonbladet TV Presenter Malin Wahlberg

Three Sweden fans harassed Aftonbladet TV Presenter Malin Wahlberg as she was delivering a report live on air.

19 June 2018 – A Costa Rica fan

A Costa Rica fan coaxed a young woman into saying sexually explicit phrases in Spanish on video.

19 June 2018 – Brazil fans

Fourteen Brazil fans directed misogynistic slurs towards IG Esporte reporter Barbara Gerneza. Three of the men have been identified as Rodrigo Santoro, José Roberto Lucchesi and Alfredo Cardoso Daumal Miranda who also sexually harassed the reporter.

20 June 2018 – Comedian Oliver Pocher

German Comedian Oliver Pocher dressed in blackface as German international footballer Jerome Boateng.

20 June 2018 – A Colombia Fan

A Colombia fan coaxed two female Japan fans into calling themselves “whores” in Spanish on camera.

 20 June 2018 – Burger King Russia

 Burger King Russia advertised a sexist promotion in which they offer free burgers to Russian women who get pregnant by World Cup players. The promotion has since been removed.

20 June 2018 – Brazil fans

Two Brazil fans coaxed three Russian women into saying a sexually explicit phrase in Portuguese.

20 June 2018 – Sports Late Night Presenter Gilles De Coster

Sport Late Night Presenter Gilles De Coster witnessed a homophobic incident in a Sochi nightclub where two Russian security officers ejected two men from the club for holding hands.

20 June 2018 – A Brazil fan

A Brazil fan tricked two young Russian boys into saying sexually explicit and homophobic phrases in Portuguese.

22 June 2018 – Argentina Fan Néstor Penovi

Argentina Fan Néstor Penovi coaxed a young Russian teenager into saying sexually explicit phrases in Spanish.

22 June 2018 – Russian man

A Russian man made a misogynistic and racist comments towards two Peru fans.

22 June 2018 – Argentina Fan Claudio Fitterer

Argentina fan Claudio Fitterer coaxed a Russian woman into saying sexist phrases in Spanish on camera.

 22 June 2018 – Two Paraguayan Journalists

Two Paraguayan journalists coaxed a young woman into saying sexually explicit phrases in the indigenous language Guaraní.

24 June 2018 – FOX Sports Journalist Enrique Macaya

FOX Sports Journalist Enrique Macaya made racist comments live on air about African football teams.

 24 June 2018 – Globo Esporte’s Julia Guimarães

A fan sexually harassed Globo Esporte reporter Julia Guimarães as she delivered a report live on air before the Japan v Senegal match.

25 June 2018 – GMS Ltd. East London

Owner of GMS Ltd. known as Gagan received a racist letter after he displayed England flags outside his shop in support of the team during the World Cup.

25 June 2018 – Marcelo Genova

Argentina fan Marcelo Genova coaxed a Russian woman into saying sexually explicit phrases in Spanish on camera.

25 June 2018 – Getty Images

Getty Images has removed a gallery of pictures titled “World Cup 2018: The Sexiest Fans”. The images were removed and replaced with an apology after the images were criticised for being sexist.

27 June 2018 – France 24 Reporter Kethevane Gorjestani

An Argentina fan sexually harassed France 24 Reporter Kethevane Gorjestani as she delivered a report live on air.

27 June 2018 – Serbia Fan

A Serbia fan sexually harassed CBF TV’s Laura Zago as she was live on air.

 28 June 2018 – Un Nuevo Día hosts James Tahhan and Janice Bencosme

Telemundo has suspended hosts of Un Nuevo Día after James Tahhan and Janice Bencosme made a racist gesture after South Korea beat Germany in the World Cup.

 29 June 2018 – An Argentina fan

 An Argentina fan sexually harassed a female journalist as she was delivering a report live on air.

30 June 2018 - SNT Canal 9 Commentator Javier Sosa Briganti

SNT Canal 9 Commentator Javier Sosa Briganti made sexist and misogynistic comments when he said “football is for men” during an interview.

30 June 2018 – Telecinco Reporter María Gómez

A man sexually harassed Telecinco Reporter María Gómez as she was live on air in Moscow.

Facebook: Leandro Dias

Businessman Leandro Dias coaxed a volunteer at the FIFA World Cup into saying sexually explicit words in Portuguese on video.

 Facebook: ZDF World Cup Commentator Claudia Neumann

ZDF World Cup Commentator Claudia Neumann has received a number of sexist and misogynist comments on social media since covering World Cup matches for German sports channel ZDF.

Instagram: Jimmy Durmaz

Sweden international Jimmy Durmaz was racially abused on Instagram after Sweden lost to Germany in the FIFA World Cup.

Twitter: Júlio Cocielo

YouTube star Júlio Cocielo made a racist comment about France player Kylian Mbappé

Twitter: Lord Alan Sugar

Lord Alan Sugar made a racist comment about the Senegalese national team after their opening World Cup match against Poland.

Vkontakte: Slut Shaming

Russian social media channel Vkontakte has called for stricter monitoring about comments and contents posted as groups such as Buceta Rosa have been using the platform to slut shame women during the World Cup.

Sanctions

Leicester Magistrates Court: Michael Herbert

England fan Michael Herbert received a banning order from Leicester Magistrates Court after he was filmed singing an anti-Semitic song in Volgograd.

UEFA: Atlético Madrid

UEFA have sanctioned Atlético Madrid with a partial stadium closure of at least 3,000 seats for their next European home match after Atlético fans displayed far-right flags during the UEFA Europa League final played on the 16thMay 2018.

UEFA:  FC Zenit

UEFA have fined FC Zenit €50,000 after several thousand fans racially abused RB Leipzig player Naby Keïta in the latter stages of the match played on the 15thMarch 2018.
