The football community is in disgust after witnessing Lazio’s Paolo Di Canio make a nazi salute after their 3-1 win over Roma in the local derby on Thursday 6 January 2005. The self-confessed admirer of former Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, made the stiff right-arm salute to the Lazio fans to celebrate the victory.
At a time when football authorities are encouraging supporters to be more responsible, having a player make such an offensive gesture is disheartening. The incident has caused outrage amongst the people and politicians of Italy.
Lazio has been punished before for the racist behaviour of its fans. The Italian police and football authorities have confirmed that they are sifting through photographs and film evidence to see if the incident merits any charge.
