Racism mars Milan derby01 March 2005

Racist chanting and the displaying of neo-Nazi banners have marred the Inter – AC Milan derby, played on Sunday 27 February 2005 at the San Siro stadium. AC Milan’s Dutch midfielder, Clarence Seedorf was repeatedly “Monkey chanted” by sections of the Inter Milan crowd. The chants, so loud, could clearly be heard over Eurosport’s live TV coverage of the match.

Leon Mann, of FARE UK Partner Kick It Out, witnessed the events:
“It was upsetting to hear such chanting in one of Europe’s biggest sporting derbies. The television audience for the game would have been into the millions. It is quite clear that some action needs to be taken to ensure that this behaviour is prevented in the future. In taking no action the authorities are, in many ways, accepting this behaviour is part of the game.”

It is unclear whether or not the referee has reported the incidents.
