Racism mars Royal League match25 November 2005

Black players from the Swedish team, Djurgaarden, faced a torrent of racist abuse during their game at AaB in the Royal League on Thursday 24 November 2005. They faced constant monkey chanted whenever they had the ball, whilst Djurgaarden’s Gambian goalkeeper, Pa Dembo Touray had bananas thrown at him.

Speaking in the Swedish newspaper, Expression, Touray commented,
“I am not angry – just sad. I didn’t give it much thought during the game, but afterwards I became very sad. Unfortunately it isn't the first time I experience that and I guess it will happen again and again for as long as I am playing.”

This isn’t the first time that AaB supporters have thrown bananas at black
players. Back in the nineties, Brondby’s Uche Okechukwu was constantly harassed with racist abuse and bananas. Unfortunately, it seems little has changed over the last decade.
