Support the first LGBT Russian Open Games in Moscow14 February 2014

The reluctance of government sports facilities to host an LGBT event has made the Russian LGBT Sports Federation, in charge of organising the competition,  resort to hiring private facilities, which has resulted in a rise of costs. The organisers are seeking to collect €2,300 to help finance the event.

The Open Games are an event free of discrimination that aims to promote healthy lifestyles, physical activity and sports among the LGBT community and its supporters.

The Games will feature eight competitions in badminton, basketball, futsal, skiing, swimming, table tennis, tennis and volleyball, in which amateur athletes from different countries will compete.

During the period, demonstrations of other sports, including martial arts, arm wrestling, different styles of dance and figure skating, will also be held as well as discussions and round tables on topics such as the organisation of sporting events in each of Russia’s regions or the development of LGBT sport within the community.

Additionally, a cultural programme featuring film screenings, psychology study groups and photo exhibitions are among other initiatives also being planned.

The Dutch Minister of Sports, Edith Schippers, has confirmed to attend the event in the Russian capital.
