The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during May 2016. This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eye-witness or media accounts. A Fare observer scheme is also currently in place at UEFA Champions and Europa League and FIFA World Cup 2018 Russia preliminary competition to monitor discriminatory behaviour.

Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA, and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members.

01 May 2016 – Croatian Prva Liga: NK Osijek v HNK Hadjuk

NK Osijek ultra group Kohorta chanted homophobic slurs directed at the away fans and anti-Roma slurs.

HNK Hajduk ultra group Torcida chanted homophobic slurs, anti-Serbs and anti-Turks songs.

Incidents perpetrated from both fan groups happened repeatedly throughout the match.

02 May 2016 – English Championship: Brighton & Hove Albion v Derby County

A Brighton & Hove Albion fan reported a tirade of homophobic and anti-Semitic abuse from a Derby County fan.

Sussex police launched an investigation into the case.

04 May 2016 – CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores: Atlético Mineiro v Racing

Racing goalkeeper coach Juan Carlos Gambandé was filmed pretending to peel and eat a banana in a racist gesture directed at Brazilian fans.

04 may 2016 – CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores: Newspaper Olé

The Argentinian newspaper Olé published a cover with a racist pun regarding the referee José Argote of the Copa Libertadores match Huracán v Atlético Nacional.

05 May 2016 – CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores: Corinthians v Nacional

Members of the Uruguayan team Nacional allegedly made racist comments towards some Corinthians players.

Corinthians fans performed homophobic chants.

08 May 2016 – Andalusian Youth League: Rvo. Portuense CF Base v San Fernando CD Isleño

Match referee Jesús Tomillero was the victim of homophobic abuse by a fan.

08 May 2016 – Italian Serie A: Verona v Juventus

A group of Verona fans in Curva Sud racially abuse Juventus Colombian player Juan Guillermo Cuadrado.

09 May 2016 – Dutch Eredivisie: PSV

A video emerged of PSV fans singing anti-Semitic abuse against Ajax and their fans.

PSV and Dutch prosecutors launched an investigation into the incident.

10 May 2016 – Croatian Football Cup: GNK Dinamo v NK Slaven Belupo

Members of GNK Dinamo ultra grouo BBB chanted anti-Roma and homophobic abuse at different moments of the match.

A group of NK Slaven Belupo fans chanted homophobic chants.

11 May 2016 – Polish Ekstraklasa: Lechia v Legia Warsaw

Ahead of the Lechia v Legia Warsaw match a group of football fans attacked a Roma camp in Gdansk.

15 May 2016 – Mexican Liguilla: América v Chivas

A group of Chivas fans directed monkey chants towards América Darwin Quintero.

18 May 2016 – UEFA Europa League: Liverpool v Sevilla

Liverpool fan displayed a banner containing the SS-runes symbols before kick-off.

20 May 2016 – CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores: Atlético Nacional v Rosario Central

Atlético Nacional player Orlando Berrío was allegedly racially abused by players of Rosario Central.

21 May 2016 – FA Cup Final: Crystal Palace v Manchester United

Trans comedian Eddie Izzard was the victim of homophobic abuse by fans attending the match.

21 May 2016 – United States MajorLeague Soccer: Portland Timbers

Media raise awareness to a chant of Portland Timbers fan group Timbers Army that objectifies women.

22 May 2016 – Spanish Copa del Rey: Sevilla v Barcelona

Sevilla defender Ricardo Carriço directed a homophobic remark towards the referee Carlos del Cerro Grande.

25 May 2016 – Scottish Championship: Ayr United

Scottish club Ayr United new kit campaign featuring topless model covered in body painting objectified women.

28 May 2016 – Brazilian Série A: Cruzeiro v América

Cruzeiro coach Paulo Bento hurled racist comments at the match linesman Igor Júnior Benevenuto.

28 May 2016 – Brazilian Série B: Avaí v Ceará

A Ceará player was allegedly racially abused by a group of Avaí fans.

29 May 2016 – Germany: Alternative for Germany (AfD) Alexander Gauland

Alternative for Germany (AfD) deputy chairman Alexander Gauland made racist comments targeting Jerome Boateng in an interview to a German newspaper.

29 May 2016 – Uzbekistan Uzbek League: Navbahor Namangan v FC Bukhara

Uzbek fans were subjects to religious discrimination after being barred from entering the stadium for wearing beards, considered a display of potential Islamic radicalision by the government.

Facebook: Matheus Vidotto

Corinthians goalkeeper Matheus Vidotto published a series of racist, homophobic and sexist posts.

Twitter: Arsenal Craig

An Arsenal fan with the Twitter handle ‘Arsenal Craig’ made a racist post hitting that a bomb threat at Old Trafford during a match against Bournemouth had been made by a Sikh.

English defender posted a homophobic commenton his Twitter account during the Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur match in May 2016.

Twitter: Separate users

A stream of anti-Semitic abuse, which came form separate users, targeted Tottenham Hotspur after their match against Chelsea on 02 May.

After being eliminated from Copa Libertadores on 05 May a stream of racist abused targeted the club’s striker André Felipe Ribeiro de Souza.

Sanctions

Carlisle Magistrate’s Court: Owen Newbury

Carlisle Magistrate’s Court sentenced Owen Newbury to 140 hours of community service in connection with racist behaviour directed towards football players in the FA Cup match between Carlisle United and Everton on 31 January 2016.

FIFA: Chile, Paraguay, Peru, Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras and Croatia

FIFA have sanctioned the Federations of Chile, Paraguay, Peru, Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras and Croatia for the discriminatory conduct of the fans.

Chile was sanctioned with a two-match ban on playing at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos and fined CHF 30,000. The implementation of the second ban is suspended subject to a probation period of two years. The proceedings relate to homophobic chants by the team’s followers.

Mexico was fined a total of CHF 35,000 for two cases while Honduras was fined CHF 40,000, El Salvador CHF 35,000, Paraguay CHF 20,000 and Peru CHF 15,000 for individual cases related to various incidents involving discriminatory and unsporting conduct by fans, including homophobic chants.

Croatia was sanctioned to play its next two matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers without spectators and fined a total of CHF 150,000 for two cases of discriminatory chants by fans.

Norwegian Court: Ubaydullah Hussain

A Norwegian court convicted the referee Ubaydullah Hussain of anti-Semitic hate and homophobic speech.

Hussain has also been fired from his referee duties.

Portsmouth magistrates: Andrew Mears

Portsmouth magistrates found Andrew Mears guilty of using threatening and abuse words, which was racially aggravated, and imposed a £525 fine and a ban from all Pompey fixtures for three tears. The incident took place in September 2015.

Racing: Juan Carlos Gambandé

Racing President Víctor Blanco sacked Juan Carlos Gambandé, the club’s goalkeeper’s coach, after he performed racist gestures at a Copa Libertadores match.

Royal Andalusia Football Federation: Isleño fan

The Royal Andalusia Football Federation fined an Isleño fan €150 for the homophobic abuse directed at the referee Jesús Tomillero on a match on 08 May 2016.

Royal Spanish Football Federation: Daniel Carriço

The Royal Spanish Football Federation sentenced Daniel Carriço to a four-game ban for directing homophobic remarks to the match referee of the Copan del Rey final.

Italian Serie A: Verona

Serie A ordered the closure of Verona’s Curva Sud following the racist abuse perpetrated by their fans to Juventus Cuadrado on 08 May 2016.
